Update on WWF Livewell Plates

In 2011 WWF-UK published its first Livewell Plate, which brought the sustainable diets debate to the attention of the public. Livewell Plates is WWF-UK’s project to show that changing our diet can make a major contribution to reducing the environmental impact of our food system. Following the Paris climate agreement, WWF-UK decided it was time to update Livewell Plates. The new Livewell Plates demonstrate that by adopting a sustainable diet it is possible to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees.

Update on Livewell Plates: towards a sustainable and healthy diet

The Livewell Plates give UK residents practical tips on how to put together a sustainable diet. They show what people should eat between now and 2030 to ensure we can meet the targets in the Paris climate agreement. Together with WWF, Blonk Consultants made an analysis of what this diet should contain for the UK. The analysis was carried out using the Optimeal® tool, taking account of both the environmental impact and the nutritional value of foods. The aim was to come up with a diet that is sustainable, but requires the least possible change in eating habits. The result is a package of four diets: the Livewell Plates for adults (18–64), adolescents (10–17), seniors (65–84) and veganists (18–64).

Environmental impact categories

Besides greenhouse gas emissions, the study included water use, land use and other impact categories.
